Today is American Diabetes Alert Day

news-freedom-elder-care-new-jersey-diabetes-awarenessToday, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) is celebrating the 25th annual American Diabetes Alert Day.

Every fourth Tuesday in March, the ADA urges Americans to take the Diabetes Risk Test, an online test that helps individuals discover if they are at risk for type 2 diabetes.

While 26 million Americans have type 2 diabetes, a whopping seven million are unaware they have the disease.

So how are you doing? Are you at risk?

Below are a few risk factors that the ADA wants you to take into consideration:

  • Age — As you get older, your risk for type 2 diabetes increases.
  • Gender — Men are twice as likely to have undiagnosed diabetes as women.
  • Prior history If you’re a woman who was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy, your risk increases dramatically.
  • Family history — If a family member has the disease, your risk doubles.
  • Race and ethnicity — Being African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian or Asian American can increase your risk.
  • Other health issues — If you have high blood pressure, your risk doubles.
  • Sedentary lifestyle — Stay active and you can decrease your risk by 30 percent.
  • Being overweight — The heavier you are, the greater the risk.

Although the ADA encourages Americans to take the Diabetes Risk Test on Diabetes Alert Day, the test is available all year long on the ADA’s website. Each test determines your risk and provides you with useful tips and guidelines based on individual results.

This year, for each test taken, Boar’s Head will donate $5 to the American Diabetes Association – up to $50,000 total.

Don’t wait! Take the test today! This simple test could help you or your loved one live a healthy and happy life.
