I would like to take this opportunity to speak about Freedom Home Healthcare’s model and the person who fulfilled my hope of what a home care company could look like using that model.
For those who are not aware, Freedom has offered a social worker as a complimentary part of our home care services from the day we founded the company 10 years ago. The founders of Freedom believed that aging is a family affair; and the process of aging – with both its rewards and challenges – often affects so many more people than the identified person in need of care.
It was felt at the time – and continues to be a core value of the company – that a social worker is the professional most suited to address the complex needs our clients, as well as their spouses, children, friends and family.
Once we knew what we wanted to do, we needed to identify who we wanted to do it! Then along came Elina Polyakov, a master’s degree-prepared, compassionate, devoted, non-judgmental, mediating, supportive, sensitive, genuine social worker.
She is a rare human being who is beloved by clients and Freedom caregivers alike because of her ability to see all sides, help people achieve a win-win resolution and speak for those whose voices are too frequently not heard.
Without the social work component at Freedom or Elina, I believe we would have created another ordinary home care company 10 years ago!
Freedom publicly thanks Elina and our amazing social work student, Whitney Lafreniere, from Columbia University.
Happy Social Work Month!
