We know this isn’t your typical Valentine’s Day poem, but it is a question that comes to mind every now and then.

According to researchers, women, on average, live seven years longer than men. There are many factors that may contribute to this, including environmental, lifestyle and biology.

While men can’t change their biology, they can make other changes to ensure a healthy heart.

If you have an older man in your life – a husband, father, uncle, brother or grandfather – the National Institutes of Health recommends the following lifestyle changes:

  • Incorporate more healthy foods into your daily diet – fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Try to exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Obtain a healthy weight.
  • Stop smoking!
  • Learn to cope with stress. Meditation and yoga are always helpful.
  • Limit alcohol intake.
  • Schedule regular checkups with your health care provider!
